Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An new initialism emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, according to doctors like child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are still being committed. Authorities disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, apparently, is what global togetherness looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that initially championed peace has transformed into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
