Following multiple episodes of suspense, schemes and backstabbing, Celebrity Traitors concludes with a thrilling finale
Warning: spoilers ahead - This piece reveals key moments from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Throughout the season, audiences saw eliminations, double-crosses, intense glares, and a memorable moment that pierced the overwhelming tension.
Yet on Thursday night, the final winner of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors was revealed.
Out of 19 contestants, only five were left standing: Traitors and loyal players facing off for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to just three: the final players.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising outcome that broke the internet and made him tearful.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, admitting to the other players that he was actually one of the deceivers. "I feel terrible about this."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "It's all right."
Social media quickly erupted with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," wrote a viewer.
"It couldn't have been a more iconic ending," wrote another, while a third called it "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK, gets to keep the entire winnings, with the final pot amounting to £87,500.
Alan Carr's transformation from giggle liability to strategic player was among the most memorable aspects of the season.
However, his victory still shocked viewers in shock, as noted by industry observers.
"The idea of Alan, among everyone, pulling off an expert performance in deceit felt about as likely as him keeping composure through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, fellow players explained why no one had truly doubted him.
"Alan could have appeared to breakfast in traitor attire and I wouldn't have believed he was a traitor. His humor distracted me," one participant said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how can you vote for a person so charming?" questioned a different contestant.
Carr said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his experience with the show.
"I want to do it again... I doubt it would be successful a second time!"
The final episode was lengthened to over an hour on television. There was an unusual opening than typical episodes, as every celebrity knew who would appear at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and atypical for the show music, as we recapped some moments from each of the finalists' experience in the game.
True to form, the comedian provided some of the most memorable lines.
"Let's face it, I began the competition as something of an anxious mess. I've betrayed close allies to save myself, I've murdered national treasures in plain sight. I'm clearly more deceptive and traitor than I believed."
At the same time, another contestant noted that being in the final was "significantly more pressure than playing for England", while someone else said he was "completely amazed" to have made it so far.
Early on in the episode, several players seemed to be attempting to become the new style icon of the castle, replacing the previously eliminated fashionable contestant.
The winner appeared at the morning meal looking like a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, later switching into a bejewelled white suit.
However, he got out-jacketted by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the challenge, with the remaining contestants getting on board a locomotive called - naturally - The Deceivers' Railway.
The challenge involved ripping up portraits of former contestants. Have sympathy for a player who was hit in the head multiple times by the lid of a substantial container.
Before long, the moment arrived for the roundtable.
The deceivers did a pinky promise beforehand, vowing to stick together. "We've progressed significantly, I won't throw him under a bus," said one, while their partner just giggled.
And one did stick to his promise. But, having slipped unnoticed for most of the game, the other still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor appeared to be experiencing a world of pain to be the final deceiver remaining. "Being alone, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, a rudderless ship."
Social media and viewers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against this contestant to be eliminated. A truly loveable traitor," commented an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," wrote another user.
But there was little opportunity to dwell on their elimination. Soon, the game reached the final stage - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The final four stood over the fire pit. And the alliance broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - following a surprising decision from their ally, who turned against them.
"It hurts to be betrayed last minute like that," said the ousted contestant. Later, we learned that if they ever communicate, the eliminated contestant calls the other as a traitor.
Ultimately, just three players were still competing: the final trio.
A contestant, looking incredibly smug, chose to conclude the competition. The same decision was made by a different player, and everything depended on the final participant, who made the identical choice - which meant that the deceiver was the winner.
For observers, the moment where the other players consoled the winner was "beautiful TV". "I predict it will be in the running for memorable moment at television honors," they said.
Fortunately, the champion soon recovered from his bout of tears, and was able to enjoy his victory.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, I had no poker face and now I stand the champion," he said.
And he even joked about that infamous murder - his best friend during the initial stages - by leaning toward the presenter in the final scene and making contact.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The last few weeks of famous people scheming, scheming and the occasional surprising incidents may seem like one big crazy jumbled dream. But it really did all happen. It will be remembered fondly.
