Folly and Royal Self-Entitlement Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet
This episode commenced with a single photograph, arguably the most impactful ever captured of a royal family member.
Present was the Duke of York, standing closely beside a female youth, while a companion grinned suggestively in the rear.
Absent that photograph, captured at a gathering in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the assertions of a teenager who declared she was trafficked across the ocean and obliged to have perfunctory intimate contact with a prince of the royal family?
An odd, revealing move by someone who had publicly asserted to have not known about her, claimed he could never have had intimate contact with her, and yet provided millions of family money to avert a protracted lawsuit.
Over a Decade of Disgrace
Against this backdrop, discussions of the monarchy acting swiftly to distance themselves from Andrew are inaccurate. This affair has endured for the better part of 15 years since that image, and an additional photo of Andrew strolling amiably with a disgraced financier surfaced.
- Self-importance: How long did his siblings, possibly even his relatives, know that Andrew was so arrogant?
- Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his aides and the authorities were performing their duties, that he had some highly questionable friends given he openly invited them to estates.
- Monetary Excess: If the family did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his overspending with state resources.
Trips were listed in public records: helicopter flights from the palace to a golf course and back again in time for lunch, private flights instead of commercial flights, all for the comfort of "the travel enthusiast".
World of Deference
Furthermore the arrogance which expected subservience when he appeared in a area or the profound consciousness about his royal titles used on his correspondence in messages to his personal acquaintances.
He managed to escape consequences while his mother, who strangely indulged him, was still living. The monarch did at least revoke him of public duties and ceremonial ranks in the wake of his ill-fated and, we now know, mendacious media appearance six years ago.
Latest Events
It was only in the last two weeks that events accelerated, following the publication of biographical works giving more troubling particulars of his behavior and that of his companions.
More information have again revealed Andrew's thinking that he could escape lying about his contact with a notorious figure.
The public (and the media) were far ahead of the monarchy. There was no one of any consequence to speak up for him, a consequence of all those years of hubris.
Monarchical Concerns
The wiser family members recognized that. The one imperative is to hand down the institution, if not as before at least whole and unblemished.
Over time the last 190 years trying to undo the reputation of earlier rulers, proving they are useful, dutiful and reactive to their subjects.
Andrew was putting all that in peril in an time when respect and discretion is no longer sufficient.
Aftermath
Ultimately, the well-known hesitant sovereign was prodded more. There was no alternative. The palace had surrendered command of the story.
Now it is the stripping of titles and the ongoing and life-long public humiliation that will hurt Andrew the most.
- Downgrading: Demoted to just a private citizen
- Past Example: The first royal to forfeit his titles in modern times
- Naval Career: Particularly stinging given his duty in the conflict
He continues to be a constitutional officer, theoretically able to act for the monarch, and he is still eighth in line to the throne, but neither of these will actually occur.
Future Prospects
Will people he meets still defer to him? Could they still slip up and call him Your Highness? Might they say Andrew,
Of course, he is not moving to an ordinary town, but to the monarchy's extensive estate at Sandringham.
In that place, he will be supplied by the monarch with one of the grace and favour houses and given some form of financial support.
This is not his former home, where he paid a nominal payment for more than 20 years, and Norfolk is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.
Pending Matters
This is not over. There are still records in the hands of overseas authorities to be disclosed.
- Governmental Scrutiny: Could legislators seek further action
- Fiscal Review: Or scrutinize the misuse of state resources
- Judicial Potential: There may even be a police investigation into his actions
Perhaps for the time being the harm to the monarchy to the monarchy is restricted. The narrative from the royal household was plainly that the stripping of honorifics was what the king, and notably other senior royals, sought.
Changed Stance
No more deception that Andrew was making the choice himself. And, remarkably, the short statement showed plainly that the royals were aligning with the complainant's narrative of occurrences.
Additionally, for the premiere occasion they eventually showed regard for the affected individuals: "The measures are judged required, regardless of the fact that he maintains his innocence of the accusations against him."
Ultimately it is presumption, self-interest and inactivity that will destroy the institution. In his foolishness, self-gratification and greed, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that reality.
