Heat and Trail Blazers Earn First Victories Following Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 first-half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat secured a decisive 146-114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial NBA match after player Terry Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Both men deny the allegations.

However, the Miami team were not distracted as they put up eighty-six opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through this."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and guiding the squad to a convincing 139-119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Addressing the detentions for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the events of the recent days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and its fans than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner also mentioned an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he continued.

"We then looked into the matter and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"So, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"And two and a half years after, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and investigating."
