Research Reveals More Than the Vast Majority of Natural Medicine Titles on Amazon Potentially Produced by AI

An extensive investigation has uncovered that automatically produced text has infiltrated the natural remedies book section on the online marketplace, featuring items promoting memory-enhancing gingko extracts, stomach-calming fennel remedies, and citrus-based wellness chews.

Alarming Statistics from Content Analysis Investigation

Based on analyzing numerous books made available in the marketplace's natural medicines category between January and September of 2024, researchers determined that 82% were likely written by AI.

"This is a concerning exposure of the widespread presence of unlabelled, unconfirmed, unsupervised, likely AI content that has completely invaded the platform," wrote the investigation's primary author.

Expert Apprehensions About AI-Generated Health Guidance

"There is an enormous quantity of herbal research out there presently that's completely worthless," commented a professional herbal practitioner. "Automated systems won't know the process of filtering through the poor-quality content, all the rubbish, that's totally insignificant. It might lead people astray."

Example: Bestselling Publication Facing Scrutiny

An example of the ostensibly AI-created books, Natural Healing Handbook, currently maintains the most popular spot in Amazon's skin care, aromatherapy and alternative therapies subcategories. Its introduction touts the publication as "a resource for self-trust", encouraging users to "focus internally" for solutions.

Doubtful Creator Credentials

The writer is named as Luna Filby, with a Amazon page portrays the author as a "mid-thirties herbalist from the seaside community of a popular Australian destination" and establishment figure of the enterprise My Harmony Herb. However, no trace of this individual, the brand, or associated entities appear to have any internet existence beyond the marketplace profile for the book.

Recognizing AI-Generated Text

Investigation noted multiple indicators that indicate likely automatically created herbalism content, including:

  • Liberal use of the leaf emoji
  • Plant-related author names such as Rose, Nature words, and Herbal terms
  • Mentions to disputed natural practitioners who have advocated unproven treatments for significant diseases

Broader Trend of Unchecked AI Content

These books form part of an expanding phenomenon of unverified artificially generated material available for purchase on the marketplace. Last year, amateur mushroom pickers were advised to steer clear of wild plant identification publications marketed on the marketplace, apparently written by chatbots and featuring unreliable information on identifying lethal fungi from consumable ones.

Requests for Control and Labeling

Publishing officials have urged the platform to start identifying automatically produced material. "Every publication that is completely AI-created must be marked as AI-generated and low-quality AI content needs to be eliminated as an urgent priority."

In response, the platform commented: "Our platform maintains publication standards regulating which books can be listed for purchase, and we have preventive and responsive methods that help us detect text that contravenes our guidelines, whether artificially created or not. We dedicate considerable effort and assets to ensure our standards are followed, and remove books that do not conform to those standards."
