Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to latest comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton delivered remarks after Denver's historic 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The team finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in broadcasting.
- The coach benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
