The Israeli Premier League local clash featuring Maccabi Tel Aviv and their city rivals was abandoned prior to commencement on Sunday, after what police described as "crowd trouble and serious disturbances".

"Many of smoke bombs and pyrotechnic devices were thrown," law enforcement announced on social media, emphasizing "this cannot be considered a football game, it represents chaos and significant aggression".

A dozen individuals and several police personnel were injured, officials confirmed, while several individuals were detained and 16 detained for questioning.

The clashes occur just a short time after officials in the UK announced that supporters of the team cannot be permitted to go to the Europa League fixture at the Birmingham team in Britain the following month because of security issues.

Hapoel Tel Aviv censured the derby cancellation, claiming law enforcement of "preparing for a battle, instead of a sporting event", particularly during talks in the preparation to the highly-anticipated match.

"The shocking incidents outside the venue and following the reckless and scandalous judgment not to hold the match only prove that the Israel Police has assumed command over the sport," the team announced publicly.

The other team has remained silent, except to confirm the fixture was abandoned.

The ruling by Birmingham's Safety Advisory Group to ban club followers from the Birmingham game on November 6 has sparked broad condemnation.

The UK government has later announced it is working to overturn the prohibition and investigating what extra measures might be required to ensure the match can be held without incident.

Villa notified their security personnel that they were not required to attend at the fixture, stating they acknowledged that some "could be worried".

On the previous day, West Midlands Police said it endorsed the ban and designated the game as "high risk" due to information and earlier occurrences.

That encompassed "violent clashes and hate-crime offences" involving the Dutch team and their supporters ahead of a fixture in the Dutch capital in late 2024, when numerous persons were arrested.

There have been protests at multiple sporting events over the war in Gaza, including when the national team played the Scandinavian team and Italy in current qualification games.
