The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
