Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Considering what is revealed about Brenner's work, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The Power of Fear
His lasting fear of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict ahead.
