The White Sox Land Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on an Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Agreement.

In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Player Perks

The contract grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his approval and grants him a free agent at the termination of the term. Additional perks include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a posting fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth-ever Japanese to play for the White Sox, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who turns 26 soon, bolsters a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the single-season record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to just 56 appearances due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to third base.

WBC Heroics

Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The following day in the final against the Team USA, he slugged a tying home run in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is slated to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
