Understated Elegance or a Tone-Deaf Choice? The Color Dubbed 'Cloud Dancer' Named Pantone's Color of the Year 2026.

Hello! I can't wait to discover what color will define 2026. What's the scoop?

Prepare yourself, since every year beginning in 1999, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. This selection seeks to represent the spirit of the times—influencing everything from our emotions and what we wear to home decor. 2025's color was the rich tan "Mocha Mousse," following the gentle and peachy "a fuzzy pastel."

This year's announcement, in contrast, is even more puzzling. It is "an airy shade," described by a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … enabling all colors to be highlighted."

Hmm, Cloud Dancer… hold on, just white? Could they be trolling us? Is white even a proper color?

How does one describe the hue of a cloud? Milk? Although some consider white as a color, every hue is at its core a spectrum of light waves. It appears in a child's crayon box, so I'd argue the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is being provocative is harder to determine. The company states, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, makes a minimalist statement, and projects subtle elegance.

Responses from critics, in contrast, has been less complimentary. Several voices have declared Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Style expert Mandy Lee described it as "a let-down." Critics have likened it to implied endorsement of problematic concepts seen in other media.

Right, it's to be hoped they're cheerfully oblivious that this isn't the best moment to be pointedly celebrating whiteness... Anyway, how can a regular person rarely near a runway apply this trend in daily life? I recently coated my ceiling in white paint, is that enough?

That definitely qualifies. So would your white headphones, sink, or favorite mug.

The timing is curious you mention runways, because many collections this year have been exceptionally bright, featuring plant-based materials on the stage.

All-white outfits were present, as always, in luxury shows—from elegant blouses to tailored gowns. Celebrities and public figures have also been spotted in pristine white outfits at prestigious shows.

On the bright side is: you probably already have pieces in this "discreet" chosen hue. As Pressman, Cloud Dancer "signifies a greener option for the environmentally aware," which essentially suggests avoiding the need to purchase fresh products at all.

FINALLY, a design directive for the truly minimalist. A fresh start, in a manner of speaking. A sanctuary of serene simplicity amid the chaos. Okay, I'm sold. Will you be creating a whiteout for your closet?

Absolutely not. Attempting to remove tomato sauce stains from a white shirt? I don't need more laundry disasters in 2026.

I do possess a pair of now off-white sandals, and such staples are always in vogue.
